SOUTH OF ENGLAND CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday 30th January Two Torbay Athletic Club members ran in this prestigious event at Parliament Hill, London. A very tough cross-country event on the south side of Hampstead Heath taking in the 321 feet (98 m)climb of Parliament Hill, noted for the excellent views it provides of the London skyline if you dare look up! once known as Traitors’ Hill during the English Civil War when occupied by troops loyal to the English Parliament.
Top cross country athletes from most clubs in the South England took part in this major event of the year. The course this year was very wet and muddy underfoot but cool with some sunshine. Anthony Raine ran in the seniors race a 3 lap course totalling 15000 metres finishing 728th Anthony Raine in 1.13.15.
Shaun McKernan qualified to run in the Under 15 age group, 1 lap a total 4500 metres. Although one of his shoes came off in the mud after half a kilometre he decided to run on in the remaining 4000 metres wearing only one shoe still managing to over runners, his foot being quite sore by his finish in 261st place in 23:38.

Next month top its the National Cross Country Championships at Donington Park Leicestershire


WILD NIGHT RUN
Saturday 30th January 2016

Kitted out with head torches and bright clothing, several runners from Torbay AC visited South Brent for the latest round of the Wild Night Run Series. With the option of a 5 and 10 mile course, it was the ladies who braved the darkness over the shorter distance, with Sue Putt leading the team home and impressing as second female, despite an encounter with a cow along the way. Rich Carus was among almost 150 runners on the longer distance which took them up onto the moors and testing the legs over gruelling terrain in the dark.

Full Results Sue Putt 49:30 (9th), Cassandra Harrison 1:01:38 (31st), Manuela Austin 1:06:52 (46th). Rich Carus 1:44:50 (63rd on 10 miler).

5K Parkruns
Saturday 30th January 2016

Seven Torbay AC runners ran at 6 parkrun locations on Saturday,

Steve Carr ran at the furthest event the Pennington Flash parkrun at Leigh, Greater Manchester. The Flash is around a 70-hectare lake created at the turn of the 20th century by coal mining subsidence, mainly from Bickershaw Colliery, now an extensive nature reserve. Steve finished 48th in 24:44.
At the Brighton & Hove parkrun around Hove Park, with 432 runners taking part Michele Sandhu finished 303rd in (28:47).
The Longrun Meadow parkrun at Taunton is a flat and attractive course with the route following the river Tone here 56th finisher was Sarah Wake (24:42).
At the Plym Valley parkrun 51st home was Maria Thaller (27:29)
Exeter Riverside parkrun with 257 runners taking part 97th was Deborah Drake (25:00),

while at Parke parkrun Bovey finishing 35th was Ian Hayward (26:11) , 60th Robert Wells(29:43) a 112 runners took part.


THE TRAIL RUNNING SERIES
Saturday 30th January 2016

Choose to run 5K,10k Half Marathon, Marathon or Ultra – 50K , Torbay’s Nick Robinson ran the Half Marathon in the first event of this series of three, being Dartmoor the Brecon Beacons and Exmoor, Starting from Saltram House the half marathon headed out onto the Plym Valley trail, but unfortunately the race ended up being only 11 miles due to the weather. Nick came home 25th in a time of 1.37.09.

This is a fast, flat race along paths and cycleways by the Exeter Canal and the River Exe.
Torbay presented the biggest team at this event with 36 members including a new member Steve Carr.
Course record was broken by Tom Merson of Bristol and West in 30:09. Last year Simon Longthorpe finish 3rd and this year he manage to improve his position and finish 2nd.
Last year Torbay had 2 members in top 61 and this year the club had 6 members in top 17.
Debbie Drake gained a PB after 10 years of running.
Plenty of age category wins for Torbay members.
Personal best times for Anthony Raine, Debbie Drake and Nick Cull.

2016 Dawlish Obelisk Arran Tocknell 4The 11th anniversary of the Obelisk race was won once again by Torbay’s Arran Tocknell who was also the winner last year and also winner on the very first running of this event.

The ‘Oh My Obleisk’ race is now a mile longer and run over 11 country miles from Dawlish Leisure Centre and back, heading to the Obelisk monument at Mamhead along green lanes and forest tracks which are always very wet, very hilly and very muddy at this time of year.

This year Tocknell won the event in 1:16:50 almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival Ben Morrish from TeamH.

Eleven other Torbay members also ran well, It was the first race for Torbay for Steve Weeks who has just joined the club. Wendy Urban was the first vet lady to cross the line.

Torbay Lee Turner finished second in the January Jaunt 10k multi terrain race. This event started and finished in Plympton. The route is a mixture of road and off road leading up to Saltram House and back. Irene Hewings won her age group.

The Torbay A.C. Cross Country Team were in action at Westward Ho! on Sunday where the weather threw just about everything at them on a very wet course. It wasn’t just the lightning that was quick with some terrific performances which will hopefully put the club on track for silverware following the remaining two events at Stover and Redruth. Hayden Fay put in a storming performance coming 5th in his U17s race and Alexander Bly came in 7th in his U13s race and now lies 5th overall in the league. Another solid performance from Raphaela Donaghue secured 11th place and now lies 5th overall. The Vet Men are leading the way for Torbay A.C. and currently lie in 4th position overall with the Vet Ladies in 7th. Anthony Raine is currently 3rd overall in his age category and Karen Frissen lies 4th in her age category.

HAPPY NEW YEARS DAY PARKRUN AT PLYM VALLEY #171

Sunday 1st January 2016 Torbay AC’s Stephen Wilbraham and Shaun McKernan complete their first 5k parkrun of 2016 running the New Years Day special “hangover parkrun” event on the Plym Valley course which had to be changed, due to flooding on the fields which are normally part of the course, a new course was specially set up to run entirely on the Plym Valley Trail, with the first heavy rain of 2016 starting just in time for the start of the event.

20th Shaun McKernan (23:15) – 40th Stephen Wilbraham (25:18) a total of 138 ran many with a hangover!

PARKE 5k parkrun #92
Saturday 2nd January 2016

Ten Torbay AC members ran at the Bovey parkrun, where it was announced at the start that the 7th runner to cross the finishing line was going to be the 10’000th runner to complete this very successful event set up 92 weeks ago, attracting a total of 2367 runners which averaged 110 per week. However this week for the first time due to the heavy rain on New Years Day part of this course was flooded requiring a new course set up on the day to avoid any injury to runners.
Ryan Benney was the first Torbay member to cross the finishing line the 10’001 overall event finisher in 8th place on his first parkrun in 22:28, this was a special day also for junior runner Kieran Raine, running on his 11th birthday, also meaning that he was allowed to run the 5k course on his own for the first time without adult accompaniment.
