DEVON CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPION – EXETER (also Westward League)
Sunday 3rd December 2016

The Devon County Cross Country Championships were held at Exeter last Sunday. This event also doubles up as the 3rd Westward League fixture of the season. Cross Country is proving to be really popular at Torbay Athletic Club with a record 42 junior and senior athletes competing at Sunday’s event. Cross Country running is both an individual and a team challenge where runners are judged by individual times and the athletic clubs by a points scoring method. Athletes need to wear trainers with sharp metal spikes to help grip as they ran loops on the muddy hilly and often slippery surfaces
Xavier Bly once again produced the stand out performance of the day by finishing 3rd in the U11 boys race. Unfortunately for Xavier the U11 race is only classed as a development race in the County Championships, but this earned him and the club valuable points in the Westward League. Top 10 places were also achieved by Hayden Fay in the U17 boys and Henry Sanderson in the U13 boys race. It was Torbay’s U15s (Alexander Bly, Jake Harker and Finlay Ostler) and U17s boys (Hayden Fay, Shaun McKernan and William Rutland) teams that earned silver medals for the club in the Devon Championships.
Competing in the Senior Men’s event veteran was Bill Valentine who has been running Cross Country events for 52 years, a founder member of Torbay Athletic Club after Paignton AC merged with Torquay AC.
Senior Man Craig McGuire (pictured) slipped over twice during this event, requiring medical attention at the finish to his arm.
The next round 4 of 6 in Westward League is on January 08, 2017 at Exeter Race Course.

The Caper is a tough multi terrain event starting and finishing at Occombe Farm, with the course leading runners through the beautiful Cockington Country Park including 8 miles of muddy woodland tracks and footpaths, in conditions this year which were very slippery for all.
Once again some runners lost their way including David Gow-Smith and Russell Hart who put in extra 1/2 mile plus reaching the Maldon Road, before realising their mistake, doubling back to pulling back a few places lost before the finish.

TORRINGTON CHRISTMAS CAPER
Sunday 18th December 2016

( Photo A happy group from Torbay AC and Trotters at the Caper) Mud, forest trails, rivers and hills enticed 4 members of Torbay AC to the Torrington Christmas Caper. A popular offering for both the serious runner and those dressed up in festive kit, it’s no surprise this multi-terrain run attracts such a following and has previously been named Devon Race of the Year. At the business end of the field Jon Pressling was first home from the club while Cathy Parkinson claimed first in her age group and was rewarded with a festive hamper for her efforts. There was plenty of mud and energy sapping hills but all 192 finishers were treated to mince pies, Christmas pudding and cream at the finish. BROWN WILLY RUN
Monday 26th December 2016

THE New Year’s Day run, from outside Jamaica Inn every year. Probably the best hangover cure ever!
For those not familiar with the event, Brown Willy is noted as the highest point in Cornwall and this well signed, informal run (not a race unless you want to make it one) of about 7 miles, will take you on to mostly open moorland, which may be wet, slippery, boggy or frozen, and it’s steep in places. Even when it doesn’t feel too cold at Jamaica Inn, it may be freezing and blowing a gale on the top of Brown Willy, so runners should come appropriately dressed.

Although it’s for all standards of runner, it is for runners not walkers. The Brown Willy Run is NOT a race. However, being first to the summit and back is usually hotly contested.

Two Torbay members Debbie Drake and Irene Hewings ran.

GLASTONBURY TOR RUN
Monday 26th December 2016

6 Martyn Breslan (29:24) 62 Steve Rowe (42:06)
