Torbay Athletic club’s award-winning author Adharanand Finn travelled with his club training buddy Charlie Baker to take on the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya, which is regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world hosting 1,200 runners from over 20 different countries. The event was organised by Tusk Trust, a fundraising initiative to support pre-defined conservation, education and community projects in Kenya. All runners that entered this event had to raise a minimum of £1,000 for Tusk. The course is set on dirt roads that take the runners on an undulating course through the game reserve, across savannah plains, along river banks, through some of East Africa’s most beautiful scenery. The heavily protected 61,000 acre wildlife conservancy is home to over 100 rhino, herds of elephant and a vast assortment of plains game including zebra, giraffe and buffalo with the runners being watched over by a large and experienced team of armed rangers, with helicopters and a spotter plane in the air throughout the race. Medical support at the finish is provided by AMREF – the flying doctors, the Kenya Red Cross and local hospitals.

Finn and Baker set off to Kenya two weeks ago to train in Iten where many of the world’s fastest marathon runners live and train. The pair wanted to relive the Finns book “Running with the Kenyans by training with them before running the Marathon. Finn said he had a close encounter with an ostrich, but luckily no lions. Only 600 competitors completed race as it is was so tough.
