TORBAY SENIORS MEN WIN
ERME VALLEY RELAYS

FRIDAY 4th JULY 2014

Torbay Athletic Club’s Elite men’s team were winners once again at the Erme Valley Relays last Friday evening thanks to an impressive first leg by Henry Irvine.

The event started and finished at the Ivybridge Rugby Club, with the course taking competitors on a hilly circular route around the South Hams narrow country lanes in very wet and windy conditions. Teams of four members had to complete a total of ten miles as a team with each member taking turns to run a 2½ mile lap. This year there was a record entry of 94 teams from the top clubs in Devon and Cornwall. Torbay AC produced a record ten teams with 39 members running.

In the Senior Men’s team race Henry Irvine ran the first leg for Torbay producing the fastest lap time for the Club in12:56, handing over in third place to Arran Tocknell who then had some catching up to do, he managed to overtake both leaders and had a great run, handing over to team mate Dominic Round who maintain this lead. The Teams final leg was run by Lee Turner, who was unaware that the competitors behind were gradually gaining on him until the in last half mile, putting in a final sprint he managed to keep them at bay to win the Senior Men’s Race for Torbay. After finishing third last year this was the third time Torbay has won this event in five years.
Torbay ladies Vet 55 team consisting of Irene Hewings, Tessa Hearfield, Anne Lucas and Lizza Kapff had a great race, being ahead in the first couple of laps of the Club’s younger ladies Vet 45 team, finally winning the Ladies Vet 55 category.

Sophie Evans was the fastest Torbay lady in 16:02, her team mate Cathy Parkinson was second fastest completing in 17:13.

Torbay’s 13 year old junior Oakley James, was included in the second Senior Men’s Team alongside three members over twice his age, Kevin Fine, Russell Hart and Jon Pressling their team finish 15th and was 10th Senior Men’s team.

Torbay had a fast men’s Vet 40 team, leading their age group for the first three legs thanks to Adharanand Finn, Jon Parkinson and Nigel Fenn but Stephen Wilbraham wasn’t quite strong enough to prevent being overtaken by an Erme Valley Harrier to finish 2nd in their age group and 11th overall.

Torbay also had a men’s Vets 60 group, which included 70+ David Hyde, a similar team failed to finish last year because Ray Wilson was struck by a vehicle and unable to run for ten months, back running again Ray was determined to run in this event helping the team to finish 3rd in their age group.

Proudly wearing the Club’s yellow & red vest for the first time was Vicky Hinchcliffe in her first ever race for Torbay Athletic Club.

Due to a missing team member Stephen Wilbraham ran two separate laps his second being only 35 seconds slower than his first.
