WOW!! WHAT A GREAT SEASON (2014-2015)
Well done everyone for such a great season for Team Torbay. 58 club members took part in the Westward League, we have run well, had a great time and had such a brilliant team spirit which was noticed by others and resulted in us being given the Westward League ‘Team of the Year’ award.
Well done to everyone and especially the coaches and parents of the juniors. Its been so good to see so many juniors running and to have so many travelling all the way to Redruth to run yesterday was brilliant.
Below are the results from yesterday and include the overall results for the season.
Already looking forward to next season with plans including:
- Further extending the number of club members taking part in Westward League and maintaining the fantastic team spirit.
- Gaining some overall medals, we had several runners and the vet men’s team finishing 4th – 6th this year so only just outside the medals.
- A trip to the Southern Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill in January
- A trip to the National Cross Country (somewhere in the North of England) in February
Thanks everyone for running, your support, driving and being such a great team.

Just turn up with club vest, pay £1 / 50p juniors (I will collect money before race) and run, no need to pre-register, no numbers, just run and at the end pass your finishing token to me.
Details are below for Redruth, I have 3 spaces in my car if anyone needs a lift, just let me know.
With the best 5 of 6 races to count (4 out of 6 for juniors) we have a few club members lying just outside the medals:
Megan Webber – 4th in u15 girls
Henry Sanderson – 4th in u11 boys
Matt Day – 4th in v40 men

WESTWARD LEAGUE CROSS COUNTRY – EXETER
(including the Devon Championships)
Sunday 7th December 2014
The League and Devon Cross Country Championship was held on fields next to Exeter Arena with the tough hilly course making it a good test of stamina and fitness for all of the 36 Torbay Athletic Clubs athletes The competition part of the Westward League Cross Country Race Series consists of 6 races, Plymouth, Newquay, Exeter, Westward Ho, Bovey Tracey and Redruth.
On the day there were two sets of results one for the Westward League, another for the Devon Cross Country Championship this produced a record turnout of Club members running in the six different age category races and the first time for almost 20 years that Torbay Athletic Club had such a high number of junior athletes in all age groups, with the girls and boys securing points on the day in every age category and two of the young athletes comfortably qualifying for places in 2015 Devon County Squad.
The first race included 14 junior girls and boys competing from Torbay Athletic Club in the Under 11 age group race which consisted of one lap, 1650 meters, of the muddy undulating grass course with conditions on the day very cold and windy making it tough going for the younger age group. For the boys, Henry Sanderson, Kieran Raine and Mikey Webber were very quick off the start line managing to get amongst the fastest of the 61 juniors racing. As the raced progressed Torbay’s girls soon crept up the pack with Kelis James putting a excellent effort into the middle part of the race finishing first girl home for Torbay closely followed by Emma Harrison. Henry Sanderson Torbay’s fastest boy in the Under 11s endurance squad, was first to finish again yesterday in an amazing time of 6 minutes 12 seconds. Very well done to both Maddie Vasey (11 years old) and Christian Vasey (8 years old) this was the first time they had competed in a cross country race. Each of the juniors competing in the Westwood League must compete in 4 out of the 6 races. Henry Sanderson who has competed in all three races so far is currently in 3rd place overall for the Under 11s, followed by Olivia Horton in 6th and Kieran in 9th place. Torbay’s under 11s endurance runners are certainly a group to be keep a close eye on as their results so far in this season’s Westwood League are demonstrating some very quick times.
The next race consisted of the under 17 Men and all Ladies including Vet Ladies. James Sanderson was first home for Torbay in 19:36 and is currently 10th overall in the series, Karen Frissen was first lady home winning the 3rd FV50 category. Freya Bell had an excellent run in her first race for the Club.
Fourth race was Under 13 boys also running 3000 metres, Reuben Vasey finished 21st in 12:53.
In the fifth race over 3900 metres Megan Webber finished 3rd, the highest position of all club members on the day, with her time of 15:44 also qualified her to represent Devon.
Next race was Under 15 boys including 3 boys from Torbay Boys Grammar School, two of them new members, Hayden Fey and Shaun McKernan running their very first race, both had outstanding runs for the Club. Hayden Fey had an amazing race finishing the 3900 metre course in 6th place overall in 13:41 which also qualified him to run for Devon. Next home was Oakley James in 17th place with Shaun McKernan was only 20 seconds behind him these three boys were the 3rd fastest Club team in the race.
The very last race of the day was the Senior and Vet Mens race with a large field of almost 170 athletes running the 8900 metres. There were 9 Torbay men in this race, first home for Torbay was Henry Irvine in 18th place in a time of 30:21. Last month Torbay Athletic Club had 32 members running at Plymouth. For almost two decades Torbay AC only had a couple of member competing in this entire Westward league. Newquay being the second furthest to travel was expected to be low on number competing but we had a great turnout with many treating the event as a day out.
Last year at Newquay only four Torbay AC members turned up to run. This year we had a massive 25 member who ran in most of the eight events at Newquay.
Torbay is now recognised as the main cross country club in the local Torbay area.
Member who ran the first race at Plymouth last month found their overall league position had improved after racing the second event at Newquay but member who miss the first race found their overall league position did not improve. Members are encourage to enter as many races as possible so their overall league position improves.
The next race is at Exeter Arena on Sunday December 7th and will also incorporate the Devon championships. Torbay AC is expecting over 40 members to take part.
